Karia Munda to be Deputy Speaker of 15th Lok Sabha
Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Karia Munda will be the new Deputy Speaker in the 15th Lok Sabha. Since the Dy. Speaker's post always goes to the Opposition as per the convention, BJP nominated Karia Munda as its candidate for the post. Munda, is a popular tribal leader in Jharkhand and has long Parliamentary and Assembly experience.

The 72-year-old Karia Munda has recently won the elections from Khunti Parliamentary constituency in Jharkhand. He was a Cabinet Minister in former PM Atal Behari Vajpayee's Cabinet. Karia Munda never lost any elections since 1977.

While the Congress made a Dalit Woman Meira Kumar Speaker of the Lok Sabha, BJP went a step further by making a tribal leader Deputy Speaker. Election for the posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be held on June 3.

Profile

He was a cabinet minister in the ministry headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He is a senior leader of Bharatiya Janta Party. Munda was born in the Ranchi District of Jharkhand state in India. He studied MA from Ranchi University. He was elected to Lok Sabha for many terms from tribal constituency of Khunti.


Jharkhand is a state in eastern India. It was carved out of the southern part of Bihar state on 15 November 2000.
